Artwalk + Performances along the KC Streetcar Route

The past few years have been all about finding sustainability in my dancing and choreographic practice. Realizing that rehearsing for hours on end for performances that may be canceled due to Covid, for minimal pay was unsustainable, I searched for a way to continue the practice in a way that could be sustainable for myself and others dancing with me. Sustainable for those yearning to dance together, as well as those not yet ready to be in a studio with others; sustainable for those who may have to come into the practice and go at different times; something that would nourish us as dancers while fomenting the importance of art in our lives and in the lives of the general public.
What I came upon was an improvisational practice that brings us, as dancers, into the world beyond the studio. We meet outdoors when possible, and in spaces like museums and galleries when the weather is bad. We dance completely in reaction to each other and in response to our surroundings.
Dancers of a Certain Age has a simple structure with a few dancers, improvising as part of the larger crowd. The dancers will ride the streetcar and then break into dance as they exit the vehicles, working with themes of the streetcar stops and surrounding landmarks and neighborhoods.
This performance will take place during the annual Art in the Loop Artwalk, during which the visual artists will talk about their work installed on the various streetcar shelters.
Bio:
Jeramy Zimmerman is a founder and the Artistic Director of CatScratch Theatre. Her work has been performed on stages and in non-traditional places such as the DC Metro, the Staten Island Ferry, the NYSE, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and a Chateau in France. She founded and directed FLICfest, in which she produced feature-length work of more than 45 emerging and mid-career choreographers; as well as 60x60Dance, a festival of one-minute works, which included hundreds of NYC dancers.
A native of KC, Jeramy earned her B.F.A. at Stephens College and her M.F.A. at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. In DC, she worked with the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and Art-O-Matic, where she helped form a multi-disciplinary, non-juried art show that included more than 700 visual artists, 40 performance groups and 70 bands. In NYC, she danced with many, but most closely with Stephan Koplowitz, Mary Seidman, and Stanley Love. Her zeitgeist moment was as a re-performer in The Artist is Present, MoMA’s epic retrospective of the work of Marina Abramović.
In 2016, Jeramy returned to Kansas City, where she continues to create work and build community. She is currently a Charlotte Street Foundation Resident Artist.
