Art in the Loop Music Series: Music in the Park

I don’t know about you, but it about kills me being stuck inside at work on a beautiful summer day. Art in the Loop is here for you, fellow warm-weather enthusiasts. Not only have we put together some stellar art installations around Downtown KC and along the KC Streetcar route for you to feast your eyes upon, but have enlisted some talented local musicians to play music during lunchtime! From contemporary jazz to funky looping compositions, we have something everyone can enjoy.

Take your lunch break, or pack a picnic and bring the kids, on Wednesdays from noon-1 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) at West Terrace Park. For those of you unable to escape work, you’re in luck, we have an evening concert planned as well.

Box Gallery Exhibition Highlights 2018 Art in the Loop Project, Opening Reception, June 1

Art in the Loop and the Box Gallery invite you to explore temporary, public art this summer! Join in the fun at the opening reception Friday, June 1st, from 11:30 am-1:00 pm, held in the Commerce Bank Building at 1000 Walnut St.  Daniel Yung, a local musician who experiments with cello-looping, will be providing the soundtrack for the lunchtime reception.

The Box Gallery exhibit is a companion show to KC Plays, Art in the Loop’s summer program of temporary artwork, events, and performances. The exhibit is intended to provide insight into the development and creative process of the many local artists who are participating in this year’s public events and to encourage viewers to explore downtown and experience the art for themselves.

Visit the gallery for a peek at the diverse and unexpected artworks, interactive activities, and performances that are taking place throughout the summer in Downtown and along the KC Streetcar. The exhibit contains a map to all of the installations, interesting facts about the participating local artists, as well as samples of past works. Check out Denise DiPiazzo‘s sketchbook, full of inspiration that led to SlinkyBall, or Stephen Proski‘s original drawing for Night People. Get up close and personal with one of StoneLion Puppet‘s creations, or the face of Megan Karson‘s Stranger on a Train. Before you go, be sure to leave a note for one of the artists in David Alpert‘s Passing Notes, where he riffs on his original idea of leaving messages hidden in books for others to discover. The exhibit runs through the summer and is free and family-friendly.

Art in the Loop Summer Music Series Kicks Off, May 30

Art in the Loop is pleased to present our 2018 Summer music series! A wide array of diverse, local musicians will play their eclectic sounds around Downtown Kansas City, Missouri throughout the summer.

West Terrace Park:

Spend your lunch-break enjoying some music in a relaxing outdoor setting. The following musicians will play in the park, located at 8th and Pennsylvania on Wednesdays, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m, unless otherwise noted.

KC Streetcar:

What’s better than riding the streetcar? How about listening to local musicians play some sweet jams on the way to your destination? Local musicians will play interesting and diverse music on the streetcar and at various stops along the way. Find the music on Wednesdays, from 11:30 am to 1:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Specific locations will be announced.

Kansas City Public Library Central Library:

The library is not generally where you find noise, but Kansas City’s Downtown library, located at 14 W. 10th St., is so cool they are encouraging live music to be performed in their stacks. During Art Starts at the Library on First Friday’s (5:30 to 7:30) you can listen to interesting and worldly music while simultaneously discovering a new book!

2018 Art in the Loop Kick-Off Event, Tuesday May 1, 6:30 p.m.

The 2018 Art in the Loop Project: KC Plays!, a curated outdoor exhibition staged in partnership with the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and KC Streetcar, features 15 temporary artworks and performances along the city’s streetcar route, in West Terrace/Case Park, and at the Kansas City Public Library.

As the series prepares to open, a number of the participating artists take turns discussing their works. They are introduced by art-directors Jahaira Aguilar and Andrew Lattner, local artists and co-founders of the collaborative group NDo. Both artists are current Artists-in-Residence at the Charlotte Street Foundation. Art in the Loop, running from May 1 to September 30, is designed to make cultural experiences available to downtown residents, visitors, and workers.

The 2018 Art in the Loop Project: KC Plays infuses the center of Downtown Kansas City with innovative and engaging temporary art that will refresh, intrigue and surprise Downtown employees, residents, and visitors. The project also creates opportunities for local emerging and established artists to extend their practice into the Downtown environment with curatorial, professional and logistical support. Art in the Loop Studio Residency: Soft Lab

Selected artists Olivia Clanton and Natalie Spicker will create experimental artwork as well as invite the public to interact with them during weaving and quilting workshops. This residency is the first of its kind for Art in the Loop and will provide opportunities for artists to interact with the public and collaborate in a new way. The Box Gallery
New this year, The Box Gallery will host an Art in the Loop Exhibition from June through July, with an opening reception on Friday, June 1, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The exhibition will include images and ephemera for this year’s Art in the Loop Project: KC Plays, as well as, maps, brochures and videos. It will also be the site of music performances, receptions and other events. The Box Gallery is located on the first floor of the Commerce Bank Building, 1000 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO 64106.

The Art in the Loop Foundation is looking for talented, local musicians to perform at 3 sites this during our 2018 Art in the Loop Project:  KC Plays!  The theme for our 2018 project is “KC PLAYS!” How can play elicit happiness, friendship, excitement, humor and problem-solving through the lens of temporary art installations and performances? Play is evident at the base of every truly creative art expression.

Artwork will be installed at KC Streetcar stops, in West Terrace (Case) Park and at the Kansas City Public Library Central Library.  We want to bring music and artwork together and are seeking local musicians who want to experience performing in a unique setting, engaging with their audience in a distinctive way.

How to apply:

  • Within the artist statement, please indicate why you’d like to perform as part of the KC Plays! Art in the Loop Project and what instruments you would use during your performance.

The details:

  • $300 stipend for one 2-hour performance with breaks. As these are paid musical performances, gratuity/tips should not be solicited.
  • This is a competitive selection process. Qualified applicants will be notified of their selection status prior to April 15.
  • Musicians must be local. Musicians can be individual or groups. Group size onboard a streetcar is limited to 4.
  • If performing in the park or at streetcar stop, musicians must be able to provide their own amplification system. A portable power source is a plus.
  • Musicians must be able to perform acoustic-style while on board the streetcar.
  • Planned performance times and dates are listed below but subject to change.

Taking inspiration from the president of the American Association for the Child’s Right to Play and professor at Hofstra University, Dr. Rhonda Clements, says, “It is important to maintain a healthy sense of play throughout childhood and into adulthood. Our complex society requires clear thinkers, playful attitudes, humor and creativity for complex problem-solving.” We are looking for artists to infuse our city with Play!!

Call for Artists: Rocket Grants Applications Open!

The applications for Rocket Grants opened January 15, 2018 for artists who live within an 80-mile radius of Kansas City. Rocket Grants receive support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and are developed and implemented through a partnership between the Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, MO and the Spencer Museum of Art, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. In its ninth year of serving the Kansas City arts community, the program for 2018-19 will provide grants in the amount of $60,000 total. Artists can learn more on how to apply by going to rocketgrants.org/apply.

The $60,000 total includes Full Project Awards, which are cash grants that award up to $6,000 each to area artists, performers, curators, and writers – as individuals or groups – to support the creation and presentation of NEW work/projects. The program also distributes R & D Awards. These awards are cash grants of $2,000 each, to support research and development for ambitious new projects that require a longer period of planning. These projects can request a further $4,000 when their research is complete, in order to extend or implement the work.

2018 Art in the Loop/Box Gallery Internship Opportunity

The Box Gallery and the Art in the Loop Foundation (AILF) are seeking a talented individual to assist both art programs. The shared position will assist The Box Gallery with exhibitions, marketing and communications.  The position will also assist Art in the Loop with the implementation of temporary public art installation and performance projects in collaboration with their partner organizations the Downtown Council (DTC), the Downtown Community Improvement District (DCID) and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. This is the perfect opportunity to gain experience in art administration and project management.

A stipend will be provided at the completion of the internship.  We will work to create a valuable experience for the intern that includes mentorship and the development of skills and knowledge that will benefit you in the future.

Arts Intern – Responsibilities

  • Communications & Social Media
    • Work with staff to create content for websites, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
    • Assist with photo-documentation of art installations and performances
  • Assist with Call for Artists and Selection Process for Art in the Loop’s annual curated outdoor exhibit of temporary art and performances in Downtown Kansas City by organizing applications, preparing for Artist Selection Panel meeting, and preparing artists contracts and related materials

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Strong written/verbal skills;
  • Be detail-oriented and highly organized
  • Ability to take on multiple projects and see them through to completion
  • Experience with Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and event support is a must;
  • Experience with WordPress is a PLUS;
  • Experience photo-documenting art performances and installations
  • Familiarity with Adobe Products
  • Photo editing skills

The intern will need will need access to:

  • A computer
  • photo editing software

When:

The internship can be divided into 3 sessions:

Session 1: Jan – April

Session 2: May – Aug

Session 3: Sep – Dec

10+ hours per week (hours may vary.)

This intern must be able to work collaboratively and efficiently with others and is expected to support events. This intern should have strong communication skills. The intern meets weekly to discuss assignments and progress with staff.

Stipend: A stipend will be paid on completion of each intern session

Art in the Loop Releases 3D Digital Model of Downtown KC

The Art in the Loop Foundation, in partnership with the Kansas City Design Center and the Downtown Council, is pleased to announce the release of an interactive, three-dimensional, model of Downtown Kansas City which features 21 sites identified by the Kansas City Design Center as strategic locations for future enhancement of Art in the Loop public art sites system.

Viewers of the digital model (which is available on the Art in the Loop website as a free web application) are invited to explore the site locations by flying through, zooming in and out of, and clicking on the sites which contain downloadable reference manuals designed to aid future artists in their proposals development.

About the Art in The Loop Vision Study

In 2015, the Kansas City Design Center (KCDC) was awarded a Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help fund the development of the Art in the Loop Vision Plan. Working with the Art in the Loop Foundation and the Downtown Council, the KCDC developed a strategic system to identify sites for artwork with the goal of improving the connectivity and identity of Downtown Kansas City.

The project included a public input process, inventory of physical assets, survey of existing artwork, and development of criteria for a site selection process. The process also included the development of a three-dimensional digital model for Downtown Kansas City. During the process, KCDC identified 21 sites; then documented the sites and a created a reference manual for future for artists’ concept development. Three local artists, Julia Cole, Phil Shafer and Barry Anderson, acted as consultants to not only enrich the dialogue between disciplines but lend their unique expertise to the development of art sites.

The project vision was to enhance the identity of Kansas City’s Downtown core by improving walkability, authenticity, safety, and connectivity by expanding the network of Art in the Loop art sites. By developing a strategic framework of public sites for art, the project emphasizes the Greater Downtown Area Plan goals of walkability, authenticity, safety, and connectivity. These sites will generate opportunities for a variety of artists to create art for downtown’s diverse populations. This leads to a stronger community identity that binds together visitors and citizens alike with a sense of belonging.
