2018 Art in the Loop/Box Gallery Internship Opportunity

The Box Gallery and the Art in the Loop Foundation (AILF) are seeking a talented individual to assist both art programs. The shared position will assist The Box Gallery with exhibitions, marketing and communications.  The position will also assist Art in the Loop with the implementation of temporary public art installation and performance projects in collaboration with their partner organizations the Downtown Council (DTC), the Downtown Community Improvement District (DCID) and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. This is the perfect opportunity to gain experience in art administration and project management.

A stipend will be provided at the completion of the internship.  We will work to create a valuable experience for the intern that includes mentorship and the development of skills and knowledge that will benefit you in the future.

Arts Intern – Responsibilities

  • Communications & Social Media
    • Work with staff to create content for websites, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
    • Assist with photo-documentation of art installations and performances
  • Assist with Call for Artists and Selection Process for Art in the Loop’s annual curated outdoor exhibit of temporary art and performances in Downtown Kansas City by organizing applications, preparing for Artist Selection Panel meeting, and preparing artists contracts and related materials

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Strong written/verbal skills;
  • Be detail-oriented and highly organized
  • Ability to take on multiple projects and see them through to completion
  • Experience with Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and event support is a must;
  • Experience with WordPress is a PLUS;
  • Experience photo-documenting art performances and installations
  • Familiarity with Adobe Products
  • Photo editing skills

The intern will need will need access to:

  • A computer
  • photo editing software

When:

The internship can be divided into 3 sessions:

Session 1: Jan – April

Session 2: May – Aug

Session 3: Sep – Dec

10+ hours per week (hours may vary.)

This intern must be able to work collaboratively and efficiently with others and is expected to support events. This intern should have strong communication skills. The intern meets weekly to discuss assignments and progress with staff.

Stipend: A stipend will be paid on completion of each intern session

Art in the Loop Releases 3D Digital Model of Downtown KC

The Art in the Loop Foundation, in partnership with the Kansas City Design Center and the Downtown Council, is pleased to announce the release of an interactive, three-dimensional, model of Downtown Kansas City which features 21 sites identified by the Kansas City Design Center as strategic locations for future enhancement of Art in the Loop public art sites system.

Viewers of the digital model (which is available on the Art in the Loop website as a free web application) are invited to explore the site locations by flying through, zooming in and out of, and clicking on the sites which contain downloadable reference manuals designed to aid future artists in their proposals development.

About the Art in The Loop Vision Study

In 2015, the Kansas City Design Center (KCDC) was awarded a Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help fund the development of the Art in the Loop Vision Plan. Working with the Art in the Loop Foundation and the Downtown Council, the KCDC developed a strategic system to identify sites for artwork with the goal of improving the connectivity and identity of Downtown Kansas City.

The project included a public input process, inventory of physical assets, survey of existing artwork, and development of criteria for a site selection process. The process also included the development of a three-dimensional digital model for Downtown Kansas City. During the process, KCDC identified 21 sites; then documented the sites and a created a reference manual for future for artists’ concept development. Three local artists, Julia Cole, Phil Shafer and Barry Anderson, acted as consultants to not only enrich the dialogue between disciplines but lend their unique expertise to the development of art sites.

The project vision was to enhance the identity of Kansas City’s Downtown core by improving walkability, authenticity, safety, and connectivity by expanding the network of Art in the Loop art sites. By developing a strategic framework of public sites for art, the project emphasizes the Greater Downtown Area Plan goals of walkability, authenticity, safety, and connectivity. These sites will generate opportunities for a variety of artists to create art for downtown’s diverse populations. This leads to a stronger community identity that binds together visitors and citizens alike with a sense of belonging.

2017 Art in the Loop Catalog – Now Available

Art in the Loop ended it’s 2017 season with our Closing Reception and Pop-Up Exhibit at the Kansas City Public Library earlier this month.  Nearly 90 people joined the participating an artists in a celebration and review of the seasons’ artworks and performances.

2017 Art in the Loop Project:  Cue! included 10 art installations and 5 generative art performances. We also added a lunchtime music series that took place Wednesdays from May through September featuring 16 local musicians and bands.  The performances took place throughout Downtown in City Market Park, at KC Streetcar stops and onboard vehicles, and at the Kansas City Public Library.

Art in the Loop 2017 closing reception and pop-up exhibition this Wednesday

Art in the Loop marks the conclusion of the 2017 season and Project: “Cue!” with the  2017 Art in the Loop Closing Reception & Pop-Up Exhibit.  Objects and ephemera from the 2017 projects will be displayed, turning the Helzberg Auditorium at KC Public Library into a gallery for the evening.  Participants will enjoy an intimate look at selected art objects and video installations.  The reception will screen feature videos by filmmaker Cody Hunt, as well as several performance-based works.  In addition, artists will speak about their Art in the Loop projects.    The reception and pop-up exhibition will take place this Wednesday, November 1, from 6-8 p.m. at the Kansas City Public Library Central Library, 14 West 10th Street.

Filmmaker Captures Dynamic Record of 2017 Art in the Loop Project

The Art in the Loop Foundation is pleased to wrap up the 2017 Art in the Loop Project: “Cue!” by sharing videos created by local artist and film-maker Cody Hunt over the course of the summer, highlighting several 2017 Art in the Loop artists:  Barry Anderson, Chris Dahlquist, JT Daniels, Monica Dixon, Daniel Morel, Beth Nybeck, and Jeramy Zimmerman.  In addition, Hunt assisted with photo documentation for performance artist Beth Byrd-Lonski.  Hunt also photographed the first Downtown KC Art Crawl, which featured 2017 Art in the Loop installations. Downtown KC Art Crawl Highlights Art in the Loop

The Art in the Loop Foundation held its first Downtown KC Art Crawl on Wednesday, September 13th. The tour was conceived as an opportunity to more deeply learn about the Art in the Park and Art on the Line artwork that is included the 2017 Art in the Loop Project: “Cue!” 
The crawl began at the Kansas City Artists Coalition, which co-sponsored the event.  At that time, the KCAC was showing the River Market Regional Exhibition: Trust, Truth, Transcend (July 14 – September 22). The crowd next headed to the River Market West streetcar stop, to hop on-board KC Streetcar. Participants enjoyed stops at most of the 2017 Art in the Loop installations, where some of the artists shared insights and project experiences personally.
The tour ended with a tour of the four 2017 Art in the Park installations and was followed by a reception in City Market Park.  The event was a resounding success!

Artists utilize KC Public Library special collection for 2017 Art in the Loop installations

Three of the artist installations included in the 2017 Art in the Loop Cue! project made use of the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Kansas City Public Library Central Library..  Each artist discussed their research and what they learned from different aspects of the collection in an interview with Laura McCallistser, Digital Content Specialist with KC Public Library.  The full interview and blog post can be found here:  http://www.kclibrary.org/blog/library-life

Collaborators Lauren Thompson and Jeff Evrard used the MVSC search engine, KCHistory.org, to find images and information about cultural icons from Kansas City history.  This information was used in the creation of  Then & Now: Faces of KC.  The optical installation near the River Market North  KC Streetcar stop includes photos of past KC arts and culture icons, as well as new photos by Evrard of current community leaders in similar corresponding roles.  As viewers pass along a section of fencing at the ideal angle, image sections placed on the fence pickets align, such that images of present-day leaders suddenly pop into clear focus.  As they pass, viewers can than look back at that same angle to see the corresponding figures from the past.

 

Local photographer Chris Dahlquist used both the MVSC’s  Sanborn Maps and  Hargrave Photograph Collection during her research for The History Vendor.  Dahlquist installed three iconic vending machines in City Market Park, at 3rd and Main St., just west of City Market .  The machines dispensed- free of charge- three cards, each featuring a different historic photograph of buildings in the area, along with a map.  Patrons were encouraged to position themselves using the map, so that they could compare the image in the photograph to the present-day appearance of the site.  The cards also included interesting facts about the buildings, people, and cultural activities captured in the photographs.

Finally, artist Sarah Star used the MSVC to find images and articles pertaining to the buildings and surroundings along her 4-mile running trail  Run the Town: A Civic Trail  .  The civic trail is marked by signs containing illustrations by fellow artist Sonya Andrews.  The illustrations were inspired by historic photographs found in the MVSC, then executed as a playful visual mix of past and present.   The trail head at The River Market West KC Streetcar stop, on Delaware between 3rd and 5th streets, also contains historical images from the MVSC.

 

 

 

 

Run the Town: A Civic Trail will be available to the public through October 6th.  Viewers have until October 22nd to enjoy Then & Now:  Faces of KC.

Artist Sarah Star Presents: Run the Town Group Run, Fri, 9/29

Join us at 6:30 am on Friday, Sept 29th for a group run, part of artist Sarah Star’s 2017 Art in the Loop installation, Run the Town: A Civic Trail.

Get on your running (or walking) shoes!  Sarah Star has organized one last group run. Experience Run the Town:  A Civic Trail with your fellow Kansas Citians, starting from the trailhead at The River Market West KC Streetcar stop, on Delaware between 3rd and 5th streets.  You will be guided by turn-by-turn signs along the route featuring colorful illustrations that playfully blend the rich history of our city with its exciting present. You will be cued to explore the public art and architecture in the area as well.

Art at the Library: “Places!”

Annette Hope Billings will present “Places!”, a spoken word performance, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13th.  The performance will take place in Kirk Hall, located within the KC Public Library Central Library, 14 W 10th St., Kansas City, MO.

Places! will use poetry and prose presented in theatrical style to illustrate listening for, responding to, and acting on the cues for change present in our lives and communities. The performance will include original poetry and prose written about themes of anxiety, resistance, and hope in the world around us.  Each piece will demonstrate 1) upheaval as an opportunity to cue the best in ourselves and 2) uncertainty as a cue to hold fast to what is known for certain. Some of the pieces will be interactive to promote audience engagement. The goal is to demonstrate how we may begin to/continue to ready ourselves for the times life calls, “Places!”.

Trio Jambaroque to Perform in Kirk Hall at the Central Library

Trio Jambaroque, led by musician Gerald Trimble, offer a one-of-a-kind musical experience, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6th.  The performance will take place in Kirk Hall, located within the KC Public Library Central Library, 14 W 10th St., Kansas City, MO.

 

Gerald Trimble, viola da gamba innovator and Kansas City native, is the primary exponent of a new style of playing an ancient instrument. His visionary and virtuosic playing combines Celtic, Eastern and Early Music influences with modern techniques and improvisational skills that span several centuries – from the Baroque era to Jazz – seamlessly uniting the entire continuum.

J. T. Daniels Enlivens KC Streetcar Stop with “Wait Here”

Keep an eye on emerging Kansas City artist, J.T. Daniels. His signature style, a combination of graffiti and illustration, brings a welcomed energy and authenticity to Art in the Loop’s temporary public art program this summer.

J.T. Daniel’s new public art installation is located in the Power and Light District on the southbound street car stop. The artist hopes his art, which fills the back wall of the shelter, will attract the attention of street car riders, and perhaps spark friendly conversations between strangers.

In his work titled “Wait Here,” a playful mashup of faces, cartoony characters and gestural imagery flows together like a layered graffiti street mural. In a written interview, Daniels describes his artistic approach as “an amalgamation of automatic drawing, surrealism, street art and good hip hop.”

“I spend a lot of time finding the right music, which creates the right vibe… I’ll loosely draw lines on the page that embody the flow or feeling of whatever song I may be listening to and then I begin to pull out characters, stories, emotions or a specific word as the theme,” Daniels stated.

But despite the artist’s reliance on a spontaneous process led by his subconscious, Daniels’ all-over composition is carefully and cleanly crafted. To create his installation, Daniel started by creating a 4’ x 4’ black and white acrylic painting on canvas.  Then the artist took a photo of the painting and manipulated it in Illustrator to create a vector file, which was printed on adhesive vinyl for the large outdoor installation.

The caricature faces and cartoony characters in his artwork represent real people that the artist met or shared space with while riding the streetcar. J.T. Daniels’ work finds success when his lyrical painting guides the viewer’s eye on a ride through his playful painting– an experience that easily connects to people-watching on a busy streetcar in downtown KC.

J.T. Daniels is a Kansas City, KS native who earned a BA from Park University in 2012. From 2013 – 2016 he worked as a youth development coordinator at Mattie Rhodes Center and is now an artist assistant at Johnson County Developmental Supports. Robin Trafton works as the fine art curator of Commerce Bank and director of The Box Gallery, a community exhibition space at 1000 Walnut. Previously she was director of Art in the Loop Foundation and a freelance critic for the Kansas City Star.
